Gals from Days Gone By

So if you've read this blog for any length of time you've probably noticed that my 'obsessions of the moment' are huge factors in what I'm passionately painting at the time. However I think the vibe of old-timeyness runs strong throughout my little creations.

Lately I've been super into vintage fashion (can't forget this, right?) old hats, gloves, pretty dresses and the thrill of the estate sale hunt. Old yearbooks and forgotten photos. Magazine advertisements, and dress patterns.

Above are a couple of little 1920s era ladies I just finished. I think they are so sweet, and a little moody too. My plan is to create quite a few of these little portraits with a 'days gone by' vibe to present at my upcoming craft shows. As least for me, small always sells better than large. And I'd rather sell it than pack it back up ;) and people seem to really like my flappers. Which is nice, because I like them too :)

The past couple of weeks I've been picking up these little dress patterns at estate sales (who can beat a quarter????) although I am by no means a dress maker. Something about them made me snatch them up. I didn't really know why at the time. But going through them, I decided that even though I cant make the patterns, they're great inspiration for art. They give such detail not only in the construction of the clothes, but the hair and accessories. I painted the little girl above, she was inspired by the girl on the pattern in the far right corner.

Of course I had to have a little vintage flair for myself. I recently got my bangs whipped into a more 'early 60s' style (and starting the long process of growing out the rest of the bangs) I meant to go blonder....but a series of unfortunate home-dye events led to this.....very brown ;) which I dont mind. I recently saw THIS movie and loved the girl's look in it. Now I just have to fade this summer tan and I'll look like a moody pre-Beatles Londoner ;)

Also wishing desperate that this cool gray weather will last (I wore a sweater today!!! A SWEATER!!) but alas, I know....its back to 101 this weekend. Boo! Sounds like I'll have to lock myself in my studio and pretend otherwise ;) all this sun and heat is doing me no good. Perhaps I have 'Hot Weather SAD'? Surely there's such a thing, right? ;)

Til next time.....
~H

Love the new paintings, and the bangs! And, yes indeed, I definitely believe in reverse SAD. Granted, I can't compete with your 101 degrees, but I am so, so ready for cooler weather. It's one thing to be shut indoors by the cold, but I hate looking outside and seeing a beautiful day, only to step outside and start melting immediately. Bring on fall! I love your room in the previous post too. Gorgeous!

Oh, how I love your vintagey ways! You are so damn creative with your vintage flair!

You need to be a New Englander. It's in the low 80's, high 70's here. I've been wearing quite a few cardigans and jackets when the sun goes down and there's a coolness to the air.

Everything is so over-air-conditioned that I wear a sweater all summer.

You are super cute!

The bangs are really cute Heather. Love the flapper girls. Maybe you shoud try doing someting like the nose art from the airplanes of WW2. That was some great art. My dad used to talk about it a lot and I've seen the old planes in museums and always loved it.

I love your new paintings! You are always coming up with something new and I love how the vintage sewing patterns are inspiring you(when my mom was first married and we were just babies, she couldn't sew at all and thought she never would-she did do a lot of paintings though. But, she started slowly and kept going-a lot of pieces got thrown out the door! and, finally she made littles dresses and now she makes wedding dresses-you might want to keep those patterns around-just saying...).

And, I love your hair! I just think it really wants to be brown right now! Love your bangs too. I also really wish the rainy, cool days would come back. I feel so much stress to "do outside work" when it is hot and sunny-to much anxiety!

Your brown hair and cute bangs look terrific, Heather. How lucky that you got to actually wear a SWEATER!!!! I am such the sweater girl - and I am counting down the days until I can wear them every day!!! I am loving your new paintings. They are so sweet - and they do look like they have "stories" behind them. Thanks for sharing your inspirations. Stay cool...Theresa

I absolutely believe there is a "too hot SAD"! I cannot wait for the first 45 degree day. I'm very tired of 90+ weather. (Don't know how you handle 101!) I also love your vintage lady portraits, their expressions are great. As are your bangs by the way! Change is always good.
