I'm sure one of the things my dear husband likes best about my love for all things Tasha is the random hobbies and/or interests she inspires ;) Like my latest one....a longing for finches. What? Yes....birds. The funny thing is, I have never been a bird person. We had a love bird when I was a kid, and he was one mean and conniving bird. He'd sit right by your hand and gnash his beak like he was planning to bite you when you got in his cage to give him food or water. Once, while hanging outside during the summer, he made a cat-call at a woman jogger and got my poor dad (who was innocently doing yard work at the time) a mean glare. George was sneaky one.

A pretty little spice finch
But I guess after watching "Take Joy" about 500 times at nap time and seeing Tasha with her funny parrot and feeding her sweet little finches...my heart softened. And then...I went to the pet store...and saw these little birdies flitting around, bright eyed and curious, snuggled up in their little nests...and my heart melted. I asked my husband, "so...what do you think about finches?" He sighed. The Tasha crazies had struck again....

Some Society Finches in their little nest....awwww....
Aren't they just the cutest? I mean, really....surely these little peepers don't have a mean feather in their body. And since finches can't be tamed, I've read that you basically just keep them in their home and let them do their thing. Also, the breeds that I'm most drawn to (the society and spice finches) seem to be pretty easy to care for, happy, social birds who can also breed in captivity. I'm sort of in love with the idea of tiny itsy bitsy finch eggs and babies.
But, alas, one of the many things put on hold while we get house things figured out. But I do dream of one day having a little spritely brood of tiny flitting birds to watch and get inspiration from. Til then, I'll just have to visit the pet shop and sigh, and read up on the little guys. I love to read up on things ;) that's a hobby in itself!
Just curious--- any of you out there bird lovers? Have you ever owned finches? Any advice on bird owning?
And for you Tasha lovers...has Tasha inspired you to take up any new hobbies/loves?
Til next time...

Hi heather,
I think birds are beautiful and it always amazes me how much work in the wild they have to do.like finding the right amount of food everyday and building their own little nests and flying and yet they sing:)
I have never owned one but I remember once in a pet store this beautiful bird the color of a creamsicle and it's little eyes said take me home and I thought about it but after reading about cleaner around them etc. I decided it wasn't for me.
I love seeing finches in my backyard though;)
Oh Heathet I do hope you someday are able to get your little bird friends...imagine your home filled with their songs!!!
I love finches! I had one when I was a teen. But the poor thing didn't live long. I'd love to get another some day. hmm, maybe I need to take a trip to the pet store.
My mom is a bird fanatic and my mister LOVES to watch birds outside! Their conversations are pretty entertaining :) I don't know much about finches except they can be a little noisy and a bit messy with their food...but so can I ;) They are very active and fun to watch though! My cats would have a heyday if we brought a bird into the house!
Oh how sweet we have finches zebra finches when we moved into our home the owner left a giant Aviary I will have to do a post so you can see. We have also gotten very good at catching Gold Finches out front of our house we catch them, draw them & study and then let them go. My son keeps saying we should get some leg bands so we can tell the ones that return. I think you would love finches they have the sweetest voice. Here's hoping you get settled in your new home soon and that you will have some birds to enjoy in the future~ Love Heather
My mother--who was never a pet person, in the sense of owning any cats or dogs--had a pair of finches that she loved. She kept them in her sewing room. They were a bit messy with food but they were the prettiest little things and she love to hear them sing.
When she became so sick that she couldn't care for them, she gave them to a friend, who still has them. I had several cats at the time and was worried that the cats would frighten the birds to death.
I take up so many 'hobbies' that I think my hubby has long since stopped keeping track.
He just 'goes with it' and encourages me to follow my whims...within practical and financial reason ;-)
When I was first married we lived in an apartment that did not allow cats and dogs soooo being an animal lover I bought two finches. Their names were Excaliber and Merlin. ( I love the Arthur legend) They were devoted to one another. I must admit they were very messy with their food but because I was so smitten with them it did not matter. My two little sweeties loved lettuce but make sure you take the inside sections and wash it very carefully and completely. You do not want any pesticides even a small amount to remain on the lettuce. The two bought a lot of joy into my life.

PS Hope you get some soon.

i am hopeful one day your dream will be fulfilled of having your sweet little birds all around!!!

In defense of little George, maybe it's because he was alone? I always wondered how lovebirds survived alone, maybe unhappily?
A pack of finches would definitely rustle inspiration. Good luck!
Dear Heather,
We, too, have been bitten by the bird bug, but we'd like to get a little more settled, too, before indulging :) . My husband just doesn't say anything anymore, when I come up with something new and exciting!
I hope you can have your little finches soon.
Love,
Marqueta
I love birds, and have always wanted finches but end up with parakeets. One of ours is very sociable and the other not so much :0
I love the blue ones, I think they'e called Cordon Bleu, so pretty :)
Finches ARE adorable! I hope someday when things are more settled for you that you may own some. :) My sister owned some love birds when we were growing up. They squabbled constantly (doesn't seem like love to me!). And they decided to bicker in the early morning when I was trying to sleep! She'd have to come and take them away or cover the cage with a cloth so they wouldn't make too much noise! I do love watching birds in the wild - any of them. We haven't had a whole lot come to the feeders this year, except for cardinals and blue jays. And while driving the other weekend, we did spy an osprey in flight!
Have a lovely evening...Theresa
Well, really the only bird owning fantasies that I have involve egg layers, but that puppy fever I've been suffering from for a while hit its peak yesterday when I saw 4 little tiny mutts of various kinds needing a good home in the paper. I think Ruby and I are taking a trip to the pound tomorrow...
When I asked Jeremy if he would mind, he said, "You know I've never denied you any small, cute thing you wanted, whether it was a puppy, bunny or child, so go get a dog if you want one." :)
Finches are wonderful... here we have the wild goldfinch with the prettiest song to tell all that Spring is on the doorstep...
Lovely post Heather.

Hi Heather,
Do I understand this hankering!!! I have three finches now! I love to hear them chat. They even talk to me when I come through the room! You will love them. They are sweet and dear little things. And, yes, I got them after I say "Take Joy" and then found an antique bird cage. Down the rabbit hole I went! LOL
I had a couple of finches some years ago and loved them. I have been thinking of maybe getting some again. They have the prettiest songs.
Take Joy,
Jan
