Tasha Tuesdays Post # 8

Why, Hello there....

This morning finds Audrey and I hanging out in the kitchen, the breeze coming in the screen door and a very foggy field just outside. Audrey is playing her newest most favorite game....button sorting....
In this age of Play Stations, Little Einsteins, and extreme baby gadgets, whodathough that a little jar of buttons would be so mesmerizing? Just another example of how simplicity is sometimes the path to joy.
I have been busy working and scheming for a handmade Christmas. Tasha liked to quote Ralph Waldo Emerson as saying "the only gift to give is a portion of thy self." Well, that is going to be my mantra this holiday season. Simple and heartfelt.

Last week i received a very special parcel in the mail! A tattered and well-loved copy of "Take Joy" that I found on Amazon. It wasn't extremely expensive compared to how some of these old books run....and I love that it came with the little library card of people who checked it out. Wonder if little Holly enjoyed the book?....
This is Audrey perusing the new book. "Be very careful with Mommy's book..." I tell her, and she usually is. This girl loves a book and a good magazine. My genes must be strong ;)
The book is full of Christmas stories and even a little bit on the Tudor family Christmas traditions and some recipes. I think we shall enjoy this book for a very long time....

Speaking of Christmas stories...do you have a favorite? Is there a book that you used to read every year as a kid or to your children? Any that were particularly memorable? I'm always on the look-out for a good book....

Anyhow....wishing you a peaceful and joyous holiday season. The anticipation of it is sometimes just as fun as the day itself. Perhaps this will be the year of the start of a family tradition.

~Take Joy~

P.S.: A heartfelt thank-you to all of you who have contacted me about how much you enjoy Tasha Tuesdays. I am so glad! They are fun to think up and I can always find something to write about. Well, we'll see where I am at week 52 or so ;)

Some of you have asked about connecting Tasha Tuesdays to your blog, and what a fun idea! You are more than welcome to use my Tasha Tuesdays icon (found at the beginning of each post) and you can link to this URL:

By using that specific URL, you will be connected to a list of only the Tasha Tuesday posts which will update as I write each one.

Thanks everyone!~
Have a great day...

Another wonderful post!
Vintage button sorting was big at my house too! In fact the 6 year old just lost interest,at least she no longer asks to play with Mommy's buttons.
I am actually not yet X-mas focused(just took H-ween down today, last week was a blur and the crazy-ness just stopped today!).
.....but...I truly think you would adore (since I am still in a halloweeny mood) ""Humbug Witch" written in 1965 by Lorna Balian. Both my girls adored and both dressed up in home-made Humbug Witch costumes!
I just recently found a copy of "Carol Birds X-mas" at the thrift...its kinda between ages for my girls so I plan to re-read a childhood fave for myself!

When I was a kid, I loved "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever". I put out a stack of Xmas books on the coffee table every year, and my kids still read it.

These days are wonderful inspiration! :)

It is so true that simplicity is the answer. Kids love the simple things in life and we should make sure to provide them things such as a jar full of buttons.

Heather, when my kids were small, Iread to them all the time. Every year on Thanksgiving evening I would unpack the Christmas books. I think I loved this tradition even more than they did. The books were forgotten all year long, so it was like getting new books for them. For me it was happy memories. One favorite was called 'A Pussycat's Christmas'
The artwork is BEAUTIFUL! The short story is Christmas from a kitty's point of veiw, after the family goes to midnight mass. I wish I still had it, Audrey (and you) would love it.

PS: Lovin' Tuder Tuesdays!

My favorite day of the week!!! I, too, am going to try to make this Christmas a handmade one, as much as I possibly can! I'm going to get started really soon - in between new creations for my shop. Favorite Christmas stories...wow, I think for me "The Night Before Christmas," and "The Nutcracker" (which is just SO magical) rank fairly high. And "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" would probably be my all-time favorite...I just cannot get enough Dr. Seuss! Have a wonderful rest of your Tasha Tuesday!!! :) Theresa By the way, the photos of Audrey are adorable.

I love your pictures that you posted. I remember the button bin at the local fabric store when I was little. I loved to dig in and pick one or two to buy! The little things are always the best.
